What in the hell is “CYC”?
Cure Your Constipation, of course!
The CYC protocol is really about getting back to what works naturally. Constipation is a modern illness brought about by modern changes in diet and lifestyle. These particular changes have taken you away from what always naturally worked and brought you avalanches of problems. Constipation, just like heart disease, was a virtually unknown condition back in the more traditional 1920′s. The term ‘heart disease’ was not even used or published in medical literature in those days… it was simply a benign occurrence of extreme rarity! Now heart disease is the #1 killer in America. The structure of our hearts we’re born with have not changed to set us up for heart disease, it’s what we do to our hearts that puts us on the highway to heart attack city.
And it’s what YOU’VE DONE TO YOURSELF which has determined whether or not you are now CONSTIPATED today.
Now I understand that many of the harmful things that have contributed to you suffering from constipation were done when you were a kid and you had no other alternative, or you didn’t know any better in other times of your life too… but you still did it to yourself, albeit not consciously.
Why do I say this?
Because if those harmful things you’ve done to yourself have had a negative cause-and-effect, you can create a positive cause-and-effect by doing beneficial things to yourself.
You’re just flipping the switch.
The very fact that you created constipation into your body means the body is adaptable. This is a good thing. The body is just as, if not more, adaptable to go back to not being constipated because that is its natural, normal state; there’s no place like home.
Your body is not against you. It is on your side. Instead of being in tune with your body, our modern society’s conditioning has put you in a position where you have been acting unknowingly against your body.
So it’s time to return back to what has always worked. A lot of my personal experience and research matches up quite well with various threads of research, especially evolutionary research in respect to health.
What I’ve learnt is that there is no reason to reinvent the wheel. Health is natural. Absence of constipation is an obvious sign of health.
Here are 10 ways to get on the CYC protocol to start curing your constipation forever…
1. Get Rid Of The Grains… for now
“BS Kris! Grain’s are healthy!!”
Alright buttercup, settle down, I get it! Bread, pasta, cookies, and cake are yummy. They are also no doubt supporting your constipation too!
If you’re constipated there a 100% chance you have a damaged gut.
And guess what, grains are not an ingredient for healing a gut lining, in fact they will only make things worse due to their anti-nutrients, roughage, and gluten.
Once your gut lining is damaged, you are at exceptionally high risk of further disastrous health conditions like non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Lectins are a type of protein in grains that contribute to autoimmune disease as they are not broken down in the normal digestive process. This leaves large, intact proteins in the gut. Many of my clients who are suffering from constipation find protein to be a trigger for constipation. On top of this, lectins are also able to attach to receptors in a compromised intestinal lumen and are transported intact through the intestinal lining. These large, intact protein molecules are then mistaken by the body as foreign invaders like viruses or bacteria which mount an attack on them with ‘antibodies’. Unfortunately the lectin proteins look very similar to the natural proteins in our body.
That’s what autoimmune disease is; the immune system attacking itself due to unnatural signals given to the body.
Generally speaking, white rice is a safe grain to include in your diet… however, it is a good idea to get rid of ALL grains at the start and then reintroduce rice further on.
2. Drop all of the junk-food
Junk food is really addictive.
You’re not fully committing to curing your constipation if you’re leaving some junk food in the pantry because “the kids will have a fit without it” or your spouse will “hit the roof” when he finds nothing sweet to munch on while watching TV. But you know what?… they don’t need it either, and if you leave it in the house, it will suck you in and you will not make the progress you otherwise could. I recommend you do this for 30 days. Honestly. If others in the house have to have it, they will have to hide it from you.
There is not one piece of goodness in that junk food that is going to help you and your constipation. Not one.
3. Drink Water
Although there is some conjecture about how much water we really need, the reality is that our ancestors didn’t consume Coke, commercial fruit juices (aka ‘sugar water’), Gatorade and soda – including the diet ones – they’re just as bad. All you really need is to get on to the water.
Add a pinch of natural salts to the water like Himalayan Chrystal Salts or a good sea salt like Celtic Salt, and even some freshly squeezed lemon, and you have supplied yourself with the most hydrating substance on the planet. And lucky for you, it’s as easy as turning on the tap.
4. Up the Fats
Enterocytes (cells in our gut lining that absorb nutrients from food and pass it through into the blood stream) do not have to do much work in absorbing fats. That is why people with digestive disorders tolerate fats very well. Not only that, fats are essential to our health and will help heal your damaged gut lining like crazy. Fats also allow very important fat-soluble vitamins to be absorbed by the body and will allow you to feel fuller quicker so you don’t have the pangs of hunger calling you to eat some junk food.
Don’t allow modern social conditioning rob you of the healing and healthy benefits of good fats. A hundred years ago everyone cooked with animal fats – lard, tallow, chicken fat – and now we’re told to cook with man-made hydrogenated oils which are poisonous and destructive. Everyone ate their butter, now we’re told to use margarine (full of harmful vegetable oils) to protect our heart. The Western world has not seen so much disease and sickness as it is seeing right now.
It’s a disgrace.
Get back to eating real food with real fat on them. Your body will love you for it.
5. Throw Sugar in the Bin
Sugar was once called a ‘white death’ . It deserves 100% of this title. The consumption of sugar over the last 100 years has ballooned so out of control that it is estimated that your average-joe in the Western world consumes around 160-200 lb of sugar a year. Sugar pops up everywhere and features heavily in majority of processed foods on the market these days. Sugar consumption most definitely plays its part when people run into the constipation monster in the first place as it’s highly lethal to the health of your gut flora, it consequently suppresses the immune system and, on top of that, to deal with a sugar onslaught, the body has to use various minerals, vitamins and enzymes at an unprecedented level, which are ultimately lost in the process.
Sugar is one of the most health depleting and constipation supporting substances on earth.
6. Get Good Bacteria Into You
One of the core parts of the Cure Your Constipation protocol is improving damaged gut flora. As mentioned earlier, an overall damaged gut is one of the hallmarks of people who are constipated. An essential part of solving this large problem lies within improving the gut flora which has been damaged in the past from various inside, and outside, forces such as antibiotic use, poor diet, chronic stress, harmful pharmaceutical drugs such as laxatives, alcoholism, pollution, old age, etc.
Holding within its grasp majority of the immune system, good gut flora protects your body from pathogens, virus’, and other nasties trying to invade your system to wreck havoc. The state and proper functioning of your bowel movements is directly dependent on the state of the microscopic housekeepers – your gut flora.
A well functioning gut with a strong gut flora holds the roots of our health. And just as a tree with sick roots is not going to thrive, the rest of your body cannot thrive without a well functioning digestive system. Taking in healthy bacteria to improve your gut from sources such as homemade sauerkraut, Korean kimchi, yoghurt, and probiotic capsules is 100% compulsory.
7. Add in Bone Broth
In the arsenal of healing your damaged gut, one of the best substances you can have on your side is homemade bone/meat broth.
Containing essential building blocks for rapidly growing cells of the gut lining, bone broth soothes any areas of inflammation in the gut with its availability of essential minerals, vitamins and enzymes. This is why bone broth has been known for centuries as a digestive aid and a healing folk remedy for the digestive tract.
Don’t use commercially made stock soup granules or bullion cubes, as they do nothing at all for healing the gut, are highly processed, and contain lots of nasties that will only irritate your gut even more.
Chicken broth is particularly healing. Choosing bones with lots of soft tissues, joints, meat on a bone, feet, etc are all needed to create a nourishing broth that is both EASY to make and having it simmer away will have you drooling for a few hours. Another added bonus from eating plenty of broth is you’ll be digestive lots of collagen which is essential for developing, and retaining, a youthful glow.
8. Go For A Walk
We’re not designed to be stationary creatures, that’s a fact. We’re designed to get out an about and move around. Walking for at least 30 minutes a day increases your capillary network (blood vessels that supply cells with fuel and oxygen), muscle mitochondria, stroke volume of your heart (more blood pumped with each beat) and it also improves oxygen delivery by your lungs. Not only this but the strengthening of your bones, joint, and connective tissue it critical for a proper functioning body, and the stimulating of beneficial hormones will improve your immune system.
Go for walk outside, get some fresh air and sunshine, and feel the difference.
9. Sleep Like a Log
Centuries, even thousands of years ago, when the sun went down, man started prepping for bed. When the sun sets today, most people’s lives become a hive of activity with doing the dishes, watching Grey’s Anatomy, finishing up the paperwork, pay bills, and check their email whilst falling asleep with the afterglow of some late-night television show hovering over them.
It’s unrealistic to expect yourself to come to a complete halt when the sun goes down an start preparing for bed, but a few things such as removing all electronics from the bedroom, creating an environment which is dark, quiet and serene in your bedroom, and eliminating strong light around you 30 minutes before bed can turn a disrupted sleep into one that replenishes, rejuvenates and recharges you completely.
Sleep is when our bodies are repairing and detoxifying the most so a deep peaceful sleep is incredibly crucial in good health. Also, allowing natural light to filter in through your blinds in the morning to wake you up is far more refreshing (and natural) than waking up to the howling of an alarm clock you want smash to smithereens.
The invisible process of chronic tension in reinforcing constipation is vastly underestimated in my opinion. In a world where things are changing quicker than ever before, and the need to stay on top of things is a daily ritual we bow down to, no wonder we become subject to mental and emotional strain. Bills to pay, kids to take care of, assignments due next week, money to earn to put food on the table, relationship strains, seasonal changes, and health struggles – and that’s just stresses the present. We also have emotional stress from memories and beliefs we drag along from our past that we haven’t let go of, plus anxieties and fears about what the future holds.
Time to unwind, relax, refocus (or un-focus), de-stress, calm the nerves, let go, and re-connect with ourselves.
It’s about having ‘me-time’ for yourself without distraction.
Our tense mental and emotional states create physical states. We are not mind AND body, we are mind-body. The two conjoined, not separate. This is not some new-age woo woo, but scientifically proven. In fact, it’s just common sense.
So give yourself a time of day if you’re really busy, say 20 minutes at least, to just do something that makes you feel incredibly relaxed. Have a hot bath. Sit down and just focus on your breath. Light some candles. Read a great book. Whatever it is, you deserve it.
